The Necessity For More research

In fact ADHD is the leading childhood disorder of any kind in the world. World wide use of medication to treat ADHD has tripled since 1993. Furthermore it has been confirmed that these staggering rises represent children with real problems. That this rise is not because we have become better at recognizing these conditions, they represent real disabilities .

Special Education programs across the country are overwhelmed with children that they cannot service or help. Most experts also agree that these statistics will rise even more sharply over the next ten years. The reason for this is that there are very few people in the research community who have any idea what is actually happening in the brain of these children.

The way we diagnose and treat these disorders has not changed in the last 50 years. Also there is no answer to the biggest question which is ,Why are these disorders increasing at epidemic rates over the past two decades. Most scientist believe that there are several environmental causes that are to blame . But ,which ones? Nobody knows the answer to this and other very important question like this.  The only way we can hope to stop this epidemic and other similar disorders like schizophrenia is to do more research into not only what these problems are but also what is causing them and most importantly what can be done NOW to prevent and treat these conditions.

The FR Carrick Institute is a research Lab which is planned to be developed here on Long Island to answer these very questions. To do this a team of some of the leading world experts who are on the cutting edge of this research have been assembled to head up and direct the research projects as well as the Faculty, PhD. and post doctoral students who will be conducting the research. Dr Gerry Leisman is the Lab's Director ,he is a distinguished researcher with over 30 years of experience in the field of neuroscience. He has published over 500 papers and 20 text books on various subjects. Most recently along with Dr Robert Melillo the executive director they have published a groundbreaking textbook entitled "Neurobehavioral Disorders Of Childhood ,An Evolutionary Perspective" in 2004.In this text they have published some of the most advanced theories to date as to what is actually happening in the brain of these children and why it has been increasing so rapidly. This text is now used in graduate programs across the world. They have also published other texts, and several cutting edge papers on their theories and also have been investigating treatments that have cured many children of these problems.

However there needs to be much more research done in to these areas, this is one of the many reasons this lab must get the financial support they need to complete the building of this lab and to support their ongoing research. The lives of children around the world and especially right here on Long Island depend on this Labs world class research. As a first effort to raise money for the development of the lab and to support this important research we will be holding our first annual Fundraising Dinner at The Brookville Country Club.

Please help support this Lab and the research being done.  Everyone knows someone who's children are affected by Autism and other childhood neurobehavioral disorders, we can't afford to wait the financial and emotional costs are too great ,so please help by attending one of our fundraisers or by sending a donation now to The FR Carrick Research Institute.

Thank you,

Dr. R.J. Melillo

Whether you are directly affected or not we are facing a world wide epidemic of childhood behavioral disorders such as Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourettes, Processing disorders and Learning Disabilities. In fact many scientist believe this is the largest childhood epidemic in history certainly of our time.

The statistics are staggering, Autism ten years ago was considered a rare disorder that was diagnosed in approximately 1 child out of every 10,000 born. As of our governments most recent statistics that number is now 1 out of every 150 children born in the US. However those statistics are already old since they are from 2004.It is believed to be similar to if not worse than the recent statistics on Autism from the U.K.. Last year several top researchers from Cambridge University believe that the rate of autism in the UK is 1 out of every 58 children born there. The rise in Autism although staggering is not an isolated problem. Recent research from Denmark show that ADHD (Attention Defect Hyperactive Disorder), OCD (Obsessive compulsive Disorder), and Tourettes syndrome are increasing at the same rate as Autism.
